Secondary Rhinoplasty
Secondary Rhinoplasty, also known as revision rhinoplasty, is a complex surgical procedure intended for patients seeking correction or improvement from the results of a previous nose surgery.

What is Secondary Rhinoplasty (Revision Rhinoplasty)?
Secondary rhinoplasty is a surgery to correct the shape of the nose. Sometimes also called a ‘revision rhinoplasty’. It is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose and improve its function according to its needs and requests. Some rhinoplasty operations can not give the desired shape in the first operation.The main reasons for secondary rhinoplasty may be to change the appearance of the nose or correcting the structural problems.
Who is suitable for a secondary rhinoplasty?
Individuals who can be suitable for a secondary rhinoplasty are as following:
- Patients who have healing complications.
- Patients must be in good overall health.
- Individuals who are unhappy with the aesthetic or functional results of their primary rhinoplasty.
- Those experiencing breathing difficulties or other functional problems following their initial nose surgery.
- Candidates should have completely healed from their first surgery, typically waiting at least one year to allow for full healing and the final shape to stabilize.
- It’s important for candidates to have realistic expectations regarding their secondary rhinoplasty.
- Patients having Issues like asymmetry, over-resection (too much tissue removed), under-resection (insufficient modification), or scarring.
- Candidates must have adequate nasal structure that can support revisions, or willingness to undergo procedures (like cartilage grafting) that might be necessary to rebuild the nasal framework.

Important information!
- Ensure your surgeon is board-certified in plastic surgery and has extensive experience with rhinoplasty procedures.
- Undergo a thorough medical evaluation to ensure you're fit for surgery. This may include lab tests and a pre-surgical physical examination.
- Smoking can significantly impair healing and increase the risk of complications. Quit smoking at least 4-6 weeks before and after surgery.
- Achieve and maintain a stable weight before surgery. Significant weight fluctuations can affect the results.
- Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support healing.
Before the procedure, you will have a consultation with your doctor to discuss your goals, outcomes. After agreeing on the details, our medical staff schedule your operation day.
The procedure typically begins with the administration of general anesthesia or intravenous sedation to ensure patient comfort.
The surgeon makes incisions, which are often inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or across the columella (the small strip of tissue between the nostrils in an open rhinoplasty).
- The surgeon addresses issues from the previous surgery. This might involve reshaping the nasal structure, removing or adding cartilage, or straightening the septum.
- Grafting techniques may be used, often with cartilage taken from the ear, rib, or septum, to rebuild or support the nasal structure.
- The surgeon reshapes and refines the nasal structure to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome while maintaining or improving nasal function.
- Once the reshaping is complete, the surgeon carefully closes the incisions with sutures.
- A splint may be placed on the nose to support and protect the new structure.
After your secondary rhinoplasty surgery you need to follow the post-procedure advices for a faster and better recovery:
- Adhere strictly to the specific post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon.
- Get plenty of rest and sleep with your head elevated higher than your chest to reduce swelling.
- Expect some swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose. This is normal and will gradually improve over the first few weeks.
- Apply cold compresses gently around, not directly on, the nose to help reduce swelling.
- Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and bending over for several weeks after surgery.
- Avoid resting glasses or sunglasses on your nose for at least 4 weeks to prevent pressure on your nose.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption as these can hinder the healing process.
- Understand that the final results may take up to a year to fully develop due to the nature of secondary rhinoplasty.
